VANILLA PINK

SKILLCULT APPLE BREEDING PROJECT

This page is for housing information about my new apple variety Vanilla Pink

Even with a few faults, Vanilla Pink will blow some minds. I hope you all throughly enjoy growing these and getting to hand them to unsuspecting eaters.

Vanilla pink is a cross between Grenadine and Gold Rush. The trial number is Grenadine x Gold Rush 2011/8 It has neon pink flesh and a unique candy like flavor.

This apple has fruited for a few years now and has long intrigued me. It has some negative traits that are frequently found in Grenadine offspring. The texture is not great, often a little grainy, running to meally as it over ripens. It can also have a fairly high tannin content in the skin. All of these issues are less of a problem if the apples are well grown and not drought stricken and over crowded like my breeding trial rows are. Even when not at the very best, If I start eating one, I usually finish it because it is delicious in a unique and intriguing way.

Vanilla pink has neon pink/red flesh!

Vanilla pink has some interesting complex fruit flavors going on, but the background flavor is something like vanilla, or a mild sweet vanilla based candy such as circus peanuts or candy corn. That unique flavor is it’s distinguishing characteristic and makes it intriguing to eat.

The bark on the shoots is especially dark and reddish. Not much else is known about its cultural charateristics at this point, except that it did not inheret Gold Rush’s scab resistance.

Season is sometime in November, probably early to mid, possibly late October, still figuring it out.

As with all my varieties, scion wood for grafting is available in the winter for a short time. Subscribe to my blog to find out when scions drop. As of 2025, grafted trees are available through a partnership with Cummin’s Nursery as well.
