Read about the varieties I used in breeding at this link.

Open pollinated, means that the flower was pollinated by insects and the pollen parent is unknown.

The rest of the seeds are intentional crosses between two selected parents. The seed parent is listed first, so in Wickson x Rubaiyat, Rubaiyat is the pollen parent.

If the parent is listed as a “pollen blend” it means a batch of mixed curated pollen of a certain kind was used to pollinate the seeds. Such as early apples, red fleshed apples, or winter apples. Blends provide a lot of diversity in one seed lot.

Growing an apple from seed is a long term and uncertain proposition.  Depending on the parents, there can be a huge amount of variability in style and quality.  They will often show very obviously traits of their parents, but sometimes not.  Like breeding anything else, the better the parents, the better chance of good offspring.  It usually takes 4 or more years to get an apple seedling to fruit.  I would count on 5 years or more from seed.  Some seedlings will not be worth keeping, but most of the amateur breeders and selectors I've talked to seem to agree that the average apple from good seed is edible enough and good or very good apples are not that uncommon. The bulk will probably be mediocre, with smaller numbers either bad or very good and worth propagating.

The seeds are all dried. Before planting they should be soaked and then chilled in a damp medium for 6 weeks or more out in cold weather or in a refrigerator. Plant 1/2 inch deep in good potting mix or seedling flat mix, and don’t over water. Protect from mice! They love to eat the newly emerged seed leaves. Further instructions will be sent with your order.
